A similar button is shown on Page 98 of ‘Buttons’ by Epstein and Safro. Identical border and style of painting. It is listed as painted porcelain mimicking earlier portrait styles stating that they resemble the portraits of 18thC painter Vigee-Lebrun. After some research, I must agree. If you venture a quick google search you will find the similarities. This button is one of 3 listed, apparently painted by the same hand from the same set as pictured in the book. Signed Mme Lebrun on the reverse as a reference to the artist. Also shown is a actual Vigee-Lebrun painting very similar to this portrait.
NBS Large 1-1/2” Size matters, these are strikingly beautiful in hand.
Condition is excellent, colors are brilliant, porcelain is perfect, but there are 2 gilded dots that have worn. The dotted inner border creates an amazing frame that when in hand makes a appear as though the portrait is set behind the border.
