This mid 19th Century etched and inked mother of pearl coaching button measures just a hair under 3 inches and weighs an impressive 2.4 ounces. I have included an image from the book ‘Buttons’ by Epstein and Safro (page 112), along with an image of this button next to your typical size coaching buttons that I have. The average coaching button is approximately 1-7/8”.
To say this button is scarce is an understatement. The piece of shell chosen has a beautiful iridescence throughout, including a streak highlighting the mile marker along with the change of light that makes the sky appear cloudy. The shank is set into the back of the pearl which is slightly convex on the reverse. The detail of the etching is incredible including the 8 Coachmen. Most coaching buttons depict a smaller coach with 4 men rather than the 8 that we see here. Any coaching button is considered to be scarce, but it’s the size of this one that matters. It also has a lovely patina and is in very fine condition.
NBS Large 2-15/16”
